UNICEF with technical support of a Mumbai-based behavioral science firm Final Mile, recently organized a scoping workshop on the application of behavioral sciences for social and behavioral changes. The aim of this workshop was to shape the Insights Lab in Chhattisgarh, an initiative that seeks to streamline the process of designing interventions and programs, from initial needs assessment and planning to implementation and monitoring across different states.

The primary objective of the Insights Lab is to identify and understand behavioral barriers that are influenced by personal, social, or environmental factors. By delving into these barriers, the Behavior Insights Lab aims to provide valuable insights that can inform the design of new interventions or adjustments to existing ones, thereby optimizing their effectiveness and relevance according to the specific needs of the community.

The workshop witnessed the participation of 30 individuals from various government departments, including women and child development, health, Swachh Bharat Mission, and education. The attendees comprised representatives from government departments, districts, universities, and prominent civil society organizations. During the workshop, Ms. Alka Malhotra, the SBC Manager at UNICEF India office, emphasized the importance of behavioral insights in bridging the gap between intent and action.

 

Abhishek Singh, the SBC specialist, elaborated on how the units and behavioral insights labs in universities would be leveraged to conduct social experiments. These experiments will enable a deeper understanding of human behavior and contribute to evidence-based decision-making for effective interventions.

The insights generated by the Behavior Insights Lab will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders, enabling them to develop targeted strategies and interventions to address social and behavioral challenges effectively.
